Hello forum,

I have purchased an older apartment that I am currently renovating. I removed the wallpaper, revealing a well-preserved plaster underneath. However, there are unfortunately paste residues on it. Online, you often read that these paste residues should be washed off if you plan to work with silicate paint or plaster afterward.

The paste, however, has penetrated quite deeply into the plaster. I tried washing it off in certain spots, but it simply isn’t possible (given the time I have and my patience).

My original plan was to sand the wall with a wall and ceiling sander to at least remove the surface paste residues. Then prime with Keim Fixativ silicate primer, apply Keim Intact (a silicate slurry coating with additives like defoamers), and finally paint with Keim Biosil.

Does anyone have experience using Keim Fixativ and Keim Intact over paste residues? If it works, or if I might regret doing it later?

Best regards

I don’t have experience with that. However, keep in mind that for a simple paint finish, more is needed than just a quick sanding. You should have a properly smooth Q3, ideally Q4 surface—meaning at least two rounds of sanding and filling. Otherwise, you might regret it later. Alternatively, you could use painter’s fleece.

Also, don’t get stuck on silicate paint. I don’t think it offers you any real advantages.
