Hello,
We will be purchasing the garden fence together with our neighbors for our new build and have it installed along the property boundary.
We will have a welded wire mesh fence installed.
The fence panels will be placed exactly on the boundary line.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having the fence posts installed on your own side versus on the neighbor’s side?

FrankChief14 Jun 2023 14:51According to the installer, the fence panel should be positioned exactly on the property line, with only the fence posts placed on the selected neighbor's property.
This is how it is always done according to the installer.

Alright, then you want it differently. Argument: The neighbor is planting a hedge, and I don't want to look at posts.
Legally, there's no difference. Except that the fence belongs to whoever owns the land where the posts are installed. If the neighbor doesn’t mind, I would ignore the 6cm (2.4 inches) and choose the option that provides more long-term security.

He means the two cited factors that the colleagues apparently gathered from other threads should have been included in the opening post here. Exactly. Even without the usability issues here, proper netiquette requires that those offering advice shouldn’t have to piece together the necessary information from the questioner’s thread history. The facts need to be laid out clearly, not hidden away.

What would you say — which option would you choose (our current neighbors don’t mind)? Not just them, but you as well. Even without checking any potentially provided information about the situation in your thread history, I can say one thing for sure: your joint harebrained idea is a conceptless mess like no other. The fiddling with hedge and fence is nonsense on its own, even without further complications, assuming ideally equal ground levels on both sides of the shared boundary. A fence placed exactly on the boundary line alongside a hedge means, in practice, that the axis of the hedge trunks will be set back 25, better 30cm (10, better 12 inches) from the boundary—is this consequence even considered? Abandon all hope that any symbolic foil sign will persuade the hedge to respect the fence! It will be crooked like the seven of spades within five years!
Get together for a truly shared fence with a professional (it certainly isn’t the “Schonimmerso” installer). Simply forming a “doesn’t matter to me” cartel is no foundation for a peaceful shared boundary. I assume familiarity with the story of chain-link fence versus sweet pea shrub, even if you are not a dedicated fan of Raab.
Dreaming here of a happy coexistence between one person’s hedge and another’s fence—and seeing the only remaining decisive question as the orientation of the smooth side and the post side—shows that a whole volley of shots must have been missed

(or if the installer absolutely refuses)Installers don’t get to refuse. Installers are executors, not decision-makers. It is often wise to appreciate the experience of many administrators. However, this explicitly does not apply to those of the "always done this way (without thinking)" kind.
