Hello,
We will be purchasing the garden fence together with our neighbors for our new build and have it installed along the property boundary.
We will have a welded wire mesh fence installed.
The fence panels will be placed exactly on the boundary line.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of having the fence posts installed on your own side versus on the neighbor’s side?

And if they already have a hedge, why use privacy strips?1. So the hedge doesn’t grow through the fence as easily or as much, which means we wouldn’t have to trim it there as often (I know I could ask the neighbor to do it).
2. It takes time for the hedge to fully grow.
3. Privacy strips block the wind better (it’s often windy here).
The fence will be 160 cm (63 inches) high.

What advantages would there be for us if the fence posts are on the inside,
and what advantages would there be for us if the fence posts are on the outside?

We have 2 options:
1. We install the fence posts on the neighbor’s side, so our side looks better because we have the smooth side without the posts.
Advantage: You can place something directly against the fence (e.g., a raised garden bed) without any gaps or interruptions caused by the fence posts.
2. We install all the fence posts on our side, so the posts are on our side.
Advantage: If the neighbors ever sell their house, it gives the impression that the fence belongs to us since the posts are on our side. Then we don’t have to prove that we originally paid 50% of the fence costs if the new neighbor tries to remove or replace the fence.
What would you choose? Our current neighbors don’t mind either way.
