Hello everyone,

I am currently considering how to tile the bathroom in my new apartment. Unfortunately, I am a bit unsure because I have chosen very large tiles. These are classic tiles in a concrete-look finish (wall: 120 x 60cm (47 x 24 inches), floor: 60 x 60cm (24 x 24 inches)) and wood-look finish (120 x 30cm (47 x 12 inches)). Could you possibly give me some advice on the best and most practical way to tile the bathroom? I have uploaded some images of the bathroom, showing how I imagine the tiles could be laid. What do you think? I have tried to keep the tiles as large as possible to preserve the tile format.

I hope you understand the drawings—I’ve at least made an effort. I am especially unsure about the wall with the toilet.

I look forward to any opinions and hope for some great suggestions 🙂

To avoid a dated 1980s look, keep tiles only where absolutely necessary. It’s a simple rule. For me, that means just the shower and toilet areas. In the master bathroom, I have a vessel sink and didn’t even put tiles behind it. I thought that might cause issues, but it didn’t.

Just to avoid the look from the 80s, simply keep this in mind
Well, in my opinion, large tiles are also very much tied to their time. It won’t be long before they (hopefully) go out of fashion again.
So it doesn’t really matter whether you’re bringing back the 80s style or the trendy 2015–25 period.

I think your drawing is very well done!
I believe that if everything turns out as you have drawn, the 120cm (47 inch) tiles won’t do you any favors. Somehow the pattern feels off because there’s always a narrow leftover space somewhere. The bathroom isn’t very large, so the proportions don’t quite work.

Take the toilet and washbasin, for example: it’s common to align the grout line in the center and adjust accordingly. When the layout gets very complex, tiles are often installed in a continuous pattern.

I also think floor tiles should generally be larger format. That tends to feel more balanced. In your case, the 30 x 60cm (12 x 24 inch) tiles would be better suited for the walls.

By the way: my puppy’s name is Bolle 😉

I’m glad to hear that you are planning the tile installation together with the tiler.

Often, people get upset later when things don’t turn out as expected.

I would recommend placing the strip on the floor under the washbasin. This way, you have a line running along the glass partition.

Good morning,
lately, and also in model home displays, I have been noticing that bathrooms are often tiled up to the ceiling again. Recently, I saw some very nice bathrooms, especially in concrete look as planned here.
Walls tiled up to the ceiling in concrete look (60cm x 60cm (24in x 24in)), floors with wood plank look (120cm x 30cm (48in x 12in)).

Due to the many responses and the variety of tastes, I would like to share the tile pattern for the bathroom one last time. Perhaps this pattern will inspire some new forum visitors with ideas for their own future bathroom. The shower is 10cm (4 inches) longer and the tiling does not reach up to the ceiling. This means the shower now measures 150 x 120cm (59 x 47 inches), but the glass panel remains at 140cm (55 inches) – I don’t think this is a big issue or very noticeable. Additionally, the window side and the opposite wall are not tiled, nor is the area beside the door in the corner. Essentially, all wet zones are tiled, while the rest is not.

The bathroom will be tiled in about 1 to 2 weeks. Once it is finished, I will upload the actual final result here again 🙂
