ᐅ Cistern! I don’t want one, but I am being forced to have it – experiences

Hello everyone,

According to our development plan, installing a cistern is mandatory. From an economic perspective, it doesn’t seem worthwhile; if I had the choice, I would skip it.

I have received the following all-inclusive offers (excavation, pump, etc., everything included):
1. 5200-liter (1375-gallon) cistern, €7,000
2. 2600-liter (686-gallon) cistern, €6,000

There is also the option of installing only the cistern without a usage system to meet the development plan’s requirements. For both offers, I would save about €1,000 on the pump and related equipment. However, this would mean burying something in the ground for €6,000–7,000 without any actual benefit, which is hard for me to accept.

Either way, I would use the cistern only for garden irrigation, with a maximum watering area of 220m² (2370 ft²). A garden water meter will definitely be installed; the fees are about €2 per cubic meter.

For me, only the economic aspect matters. Which option is the most cost-effective? I’m leaning toward the 2600-liter (686-gallon) cistern. Or would it be better to just bury the cistern without any usage?

Thank you in advance.

I assume that regulations regarding garden irrigation will also change in Bavaria and that drinking water will become more expensive. It is better to install a rainwater tank now than later. Rainwater is generally better for plants than drinking water.

What year was that, if I may ask, and was it also in southern Germany?
It was installed at the beginning of 2021, and no. It’s located in the beautiful Münsterland region. A domestic water system including a cistern generally costs about the same everywhere (except for transport), according to the manufacturer’s price list, or even somewhat less at the building materials supplier. We have the "Mall Hauswasserpaket Tano L" package.

edit: I’m quite shocked by the massive price increase :-( :huch

The Mall Hauswasserpaket Tano L alone costs around €5,500 with a 5000-liter (1,320-gallon) cistern, plus the excavation and connection to the water supply. That sounds more like a five-figure sum.

Yep, just checked. The invoice from October 20, 2020, was actually €3,265.63 (minus 3% discount) for the package including a 5.8 m³ (1,533-gallon) cistern.
Crazy what’s happened since then. But definitely ask the current price from the building materials supplier; they were cheaper than the manufacturer (even though the manufacturer produces locally here!).

My nephew has a plastic cistern of a few thousand liters capacity for, I think, less than €1,000. He installed it himself with some help, including burying it and connecting it.

Quite a price change. I would definitely ask the current price from the building materials supplier, who was cheaper than the manufacturer (even though they produce locally here!).

The 5,200-liter (1,375-gallon) cistern costs around 2,500 euros in retail. Additional costs come from the pump, conduit pipes, electrical outlet, labor, and excavation. I don’t think you can get it much cheaper unless you do most of the work yourself.

I have connected all toilets and the washing machine and have a crane in the garden. The roof drains into the cistern. It is definitely worth it. Especially since it is the only forward-looking solution. The dry years will become more frequent, and people who are building a house will find several thousand euros too much for a sustainable solution? I don’t understand that.
