ᐅ Reducing painting costs. Any suggestions?

Hello everyone!

The drywall installers will be finished soon, and after the tilers, we can focus on painting and flooring work. Accordingly, we’ve requested a quote. Unfortunately, it is well above our budget (over 16,000€). The quote includes covering and masking work, priming, filling and sanding, and paint fleece.

We now want to skip the paint fleece, as a perfectly smooth surface is not that important to us and the cost is quite high. But even without this item, we are still looking at over 10,000€. The filling and sanding work is also quite expensive. We could probably save those costs if we apply textured wallpaper (Raufasertapete) on the Q2 walls, right, or am I mistaken?

What other options are there? We have Q2 plaster. We know it’s not recommended to paint directly on this surface. However, our expectations for the finish are not very high. We are not fans of wallpaper, so eventually we just want to be able to paint on our own.

What exactly speaks against simply painting our Q2 walls? (Of course, we would sand and fill them beforehand.)

Thanks for your answers!

What Tassimat has written is something I can only recommend as well.

Personally, I would strongly advise against it. We tried it once and received offers from various contractors...
Especially when it comes to painting, I wouldn’t recommend applying wallpaper yourself unless you have done it many times before.
Filling and sanding is no problem. Applying textured (woodchip) wallpaper is still manageable, but a smooth non-woven wallpaper? It might stick to the walls, but the ceiling? For someone inexperienced? I believe it would cause a lot of frustration... And I say this as a hobby wallpapering expert.

We are also having parts of our house professionally painted: 250m² (2690 sq ft) of ceiling area including sloping sections, and 120m² (1290 sq ft) of wall surface in the gallery. The quotes ranged from 7,000 to 12,000. The scope included:
- Filling, sanding, priming, applying non-woven wallpaper, painting ceilings white, and sealing edges with acrylic
- Filling, sanding, priming, and applying patterned wallpaper to the walls

At first, it sounds very expensive, but the painter is fully occupied for a whole month. How long would it take us to do this privately? Especially since ceilings with increased room height are really challenging, not to mention the gallery with scaffolding…

A whole month for the work? Are you sure? I’d guess a maximum of 2 weeks. With two painters, more like just over one week. How long will it take us if the whole house is filled, covered with paintable wallpaper, and painted twice? 3 months? 😎

If you want to paint directly onto Q2, the overall result will probably look rather rough and have a garage-like feel. For living spaces, that wouldn’t work for me.
Here, we wallpapered textured wallpaper over lightly sanded Q2, and we wouldn’t do that again.
Rooms with heavy texture look okay, but in some areas we used wallpaper with a lighter texture (non-woven fiber), and where the wallpaper is thinner it looks poor. Especially on the ceilings. You notice every unevenness in the plaster much more clearly than before, because the wallpaper kind of tents over them.

Overall, based on our experience, I’ve come to the conclusion that you can’t avoid sanding to at least Q3 if you want it to look reasonably good. Sure, you can live with it, no doubt, but if you look at it over time it does become quite bothersome.

If this is directed at me: We’re having everything skimmed, sanded, and painter’s fleece applied everywhere (except the walls in the bathroom). Then it will be painted twice, and ceiling and baseboards will be installed. Our quality level is closer to Q3 than Q2. The Turkish team already managed to get a very smooth finish with the lime gypsum plaster.
