Hello everyone,

Since my lawn has become very uneven and the area near the forest at the back is quite muddy, I want to topdress the lawn with sand and level it.

My plan is to spread about 10 liters of sand per square meter, smooth it with a lawn rake, overseed, roll it, cover with topsoil, rake again, and finish.

My building materials supplier offers the following types of sand (I don’t want to buy lawn sand from the hardware store because of the price and the fact that I will need about 3 tons due to the area):

- Washed silver sand (play sand)
- Rhine sand 0/2
- Concrete sand 0/2

Which one is most suitable?

Regular sand, grain size 3 - 4mm (0.12 - 0.16 inches)

Check if there are any sand or gravel pits nearby. Here, at our gravel plant, I can get sand for between €10 and €17 per ton, depending on the grain size...

It is important that the sand is washed. Otherwise, it won’t provide much in terms of drainage. That’s why a grain size without fines is also necessary.
3 tons is a somewhat awkward amount. For a truck, it’s actually too little to transport in one go, but with a trailer you would have to make three trips...

That is almost exactly two big bags (each 1 cubic meter (35 cubic feet)). They can be easily delivered.

First of all, thank you for your help.
The price here is quite reasonable. Sand costs 21 € gross per ton. The delivery fee of 50 € is rather high, but two other neighbors also need material, so the delivery cost is shared between three.

Thanks also for the tip about the drainage. We have actually installed drainage pipes because the subsoil is extremely clayey and rocky. Naturally, they should not become clogged.
