Hello everyone,
we are about to install the cisterns and decide on the toilet height. For our Geberit ceramic toilet, the installation manual states 41cm (16 inches) from the finished floor level. However, I personally find this too low. I am now considering a ceramic height of 46cm (18 inches) (48cm (19 inches) seat height minus 2cm (1 inch) toilet seat thickness).
What height have you set in your homes?
Regards and thanks,
Hannes

During the design selection appointment at the showroom, we actually had the chance to try out several different heights by sitting on them 🙂 It never even occurred to us during the design selection that we would eventually have to make such a decision.

You should look it up. It’s not just about children. After writing my reply, I almost suspected it wasn’t only meant for the kids 🙂 I’ll look it up…

Toilet height including seat: 46cm (could be 1 cm lower based on my sitting habits)
Guest bathroom sink at 85cm works well! We have now decided on toilets with a ceramic rim height of 43cm.
Guest bathroom sink at 85cm, and main bathroom sink at 90cm.
Many thanks to everyone!!

On one hand, we were surprised; on the other, we were very satisfied that every detail was discussed step by step and clearly documented on around 60 pages. This included, among other things, the height of the toilets and washbasins, which could also be assessed or evaluated at the showroom.

Our general contractor has several subcontractors, including one for plumbing. For us, “selection” meant driving to the wholesaler, choosing the sanitary fixtures, and that was it. We held the construction meeting about the fixtures with the plumbing foreman on-site, which I later appreciated because it took place right where the work was happening!
When I bought a newly built terraced house from a developer, I wasn’t asked about the heights either, so to be honest, I probably wouldn’t have thought about it at the time.

We hadn’t actually made a decision – the plumber asked us right before installation… we had no idea that the height was so important. But he made a good choice anyway 😉 In our case, he installed what he thought was best without asking. Well, now we are replacing one toilet with a model that is 6cm (2.4 inches) higher, and below we had the drywall removed and raised accordingly.
I think there are pros and cons to all the mentioned dimensions, which I hadn’t considered before. But since both ceramics here suddenly ended up at 40cm (16 inches) – 9cm (3.5 inches) lower than before – we noticed a significant difference that felt too low for us. If we had been used to 40cm (16 inches) it probably wouldn’t have bothered us. It’s frustrating and unnecessary that such details weren’t checked and that we didn’t think of them ourselves.

Especially as you get older, it’s better not to go higher, because mobility decreases and it becomes difficult to place your feet on a stool. If there are concerns about standing up, it’s better to consider a proper grab bar. Unfortunately, the plumbing topic is not covered in proctology lectures.
