Hello,
I received a quote from the plumbing company carrying out the work, and I was almost shocked. I understand that plumbing installations are expensive. However, I find the installation of a rain shower (surface-mounted, with thermostat) for about 1000 € gross quite overpriced (especially since you can find similar products online for around 100-300 € without installation, which shouldn’t be that expensive, especially considering the user manual is available online).
The installation of a faucet we chose is supposed to cost over 300 €.
Is this justified, and does it really result in significantly better quality (I am not an expert), or is this simply taking advantage of the contract situation (take it or leave it)? We are not obliged and could go with the standard option….

The installation typically includes both materials and labor. Does the faucet belong to a washbasin or a bathtub? Is the fitting included? Are the pipes and angle valves part of it?
If you take an online price for a rain shower, have you included all installation parts in your comparison?
It is unclear to me what exactly you are comparing.

I also don’t know what you are comparing here: it makes a difference whether you buy a thermostat from Aldi, Hornbach brand Schulte, or Grohe. The plumber who gives you the quote provides a warranty and professional workmanship. You won’t get rich doing this anymore.

knalltüte21 Nov 2020 18:31For a "good" rain shower with a "good" thermostat, including the necessary materials and installation, around 1000€ is probably reasonable, depending on the quality of both the rain shower and the thermostat. Both can be found starting at about 50€ (55 USD), or each can cost several hundred euros. So it’s like comparing apples and oranges?
In our plumbing quotes, the markups over common online offers were only between 25% and 50% on the materials alone (material cost only).
We then hired a plumbing company that offered small packages. For example, toilet + seat + flush actuator, basically everything related to the toilet including the respective piping. These packages were manageable, sufficiently transparent, and the prices fit our budget. We were also granted permission to purchase a few items separately (e.g., designer bathtub, washbasin), which would then be installed based on hourly rates (without additional surcharges).

I’m not sure what you’re comparing here: it definitely makes a difference whether you buy a thermostat at Aldi, at Hornbach under the Schulte brand, or from Grohe. The plumber providing the offer gives you a warranty and delivers skilled workmanship. You won’t get rich from it anymore. Delivery + installation, so everything included.

Both can be found from around €50 (about $55) each, but also for several hundred euros. So it’s an apples and oranges problem? Yes, how does a layperson recognize “good”… Besides the model name, we hardly have any details.
But after I heard from an acquaintance that their (installation + delivery) kitchen faucet cost about €400 (about $440) (and they could choose the company freely, so not “forced”), I guess this still stays within a reasonable range (so no “sky-high prices”)…
