Dear community,

We plan to build an open carport in the front yard, with the long side running parallel to the street. To improve the chances of approval from the building authority regarding zoning regulations, I thought about creating a green roof on the carport and also planting climbing plants on a trellis or similar structure on the side (this would also provide some privacy from the street and a bit of weather protection). What do you think about this? Is it practical or likely to cause problems over the years? The carport would need to have a walkable roof, which would also increase the cost...

Is there a requirement for green roofing on the carport?
If not, your motivation to do it is pointless. The building authority will not turn a blind eye just because something looks “nice.”

Green roofing on a carport is an expensive undertaking because carport roofs are usually not designed to support additional loads. When using wood, this can only be achieved with relatively thick materials (which are currently expensive and may not look very appealing); otherwise, you quickly end up with concrete or steel constructions. This then costs roughly as much as a prefabricated garage of the same size.

I had suspected the issue with material thickness and costs...
There is no specific requirement. The development plan from 1954 mentions a "front garden," and the area is marked in green. I thought maybe I could convince the building authority to approve the carport if it looks as green as possible.

So, does that mean you are not allowed to place a carport there at all?

Possibly yes. It depends on how the building authority is inclined.

Carport with extensive greenery. We are currently going through the same process. Unfortunately, it is mandatory in our area.

A note of caution.
Be careful when searching for suppliers; most carports you can configure online have insufficient load-bearing capacity.
Even those that offer it as an option require caution! Make sure to consider your snow load zone. The suppliers I contacted immediately withdrew their offers after I mentioned this. It’s hard to believe.

Additionally, this makes the carport quite expensive. Instead of €10,000–15,000 (depending on size), you can expect an additional cost of more than €10,000 (plus foundations).
