How did you feel just before moving into your new home? We are about to move in (early September), and of course, the excitement is really high, but every time I notice a new “to-do,” like a lit house number, a mailbox, or some outdoor lights. I feel like this will go on forever, and that feeling is really wearing me down. The feeling of never being finished. I know you can’t have everything done at once; many things will be added over time. Right now, I just can’t focus or come up with ideas for the utility room. Most of the furniture has been ordered, but many small things are still missing, like a desk, lamps, or dressers. Some things need fixing, and at the moment, painting is in progress. I’m still ignoring the outdoor area for now, but I think that will change quickly once we’re living in the house and I see the construction site outside every time I look out.
How long did it take for you to really feel at home? When did you feel completely “done”? Or does a house always remain a work in progress, with something to do all the time? Looking forward to your answers :-)

If you mow the weeds short enough, you can convince yourself it’s a lawn 😉
We moved in March, and the house was basically finished except for the terraces and the baseboards… Installing the baseboards was my attempt at doing it myself, but it needs to be done again by someone more experienced.
The garden will be roughly landscaped this autumn and completed in spring.

Much of the house was ready by the time we moved in. In one room, the baseboards were still missing. They were finished quickly after the hardware store received their delivery...
The first part of the landscaping was done about a month after moving in. I mowed the lawn three months later, and by then the front garden was already looking well established.
After that, things were looking quite decent. If everything goes as planned, the remaining landscaping will be done next month, about two years later. The patio and parking spaces will be paved... That will complete almost everything. A few fence slats are still missing, and the outdoor lights have been here for a year already... I have been procrastinating a lot on that. But I’m not really under any pressure.
The first ideas about rearranging or redesigning have also started to come up... It definitely won’t be boring!

Bertram10017 Aug 2021 21:21After half a year of living in the house, I’m experiencing house burnout. 😀 My energy to quickly finish everything is completely gone. I actually moved in while I still had to lay the floor and assemble the kitchen. When I moved in, I also had mice in the house that drove me crazy.
For now, I’m taking a break from the house and will start again in the autumn to tackle the remaining tasks (leveling the terrace, landscaping the garden, varnishing and reinforcing the shed door, painting and furnishing the bedroom comfortably, making the living room cozy, reorganizing the kitchen – I had initially just shoved everything into the cabinets without any system). I find it incredibly exhausting to finish all this stuff. By the way, I have a prefab house from a developer, which really doesn’t deserve the name “finished.”

Fortunately, you’re not renovating a 60-year-old property while living in it and doing a lot of the work yourselves. 😀 There really is no shortage of work.

a house burnout. Haha, that’s exactly what I went through for two years after moving in 😉
Yes, it really was like that inside. Many temporary solutions had to wait because the garden demanded a lot of attention. After that, I needed another two years to regain my energy.

How long did it take you to really feel at home? When I swept the shell construction, that was when it became my (future) home!

When were you truly “finished”? Even after seven years, there are still small “construction sites”: a third terrace, storage room… I completed our cloakroom just three months ago.

Or does the house remain a permanent work in progress, with always something to do? Neighbors still have no front yard, no parking space, and no trash area after three years… it doesn’t look nice, but that’s their choice.
I’ve never understood why everything has to be finished right away. Sure, what you don’t do immediately, you might never do—but honestly, who cares if an outdoor light is missing or the house number is just a cardboard piece leaning in the window? Nobody!

I enjoy coming up with something new and putting it into practice again and again. Me too 🙂
