Pacc666Hello,
we are planning to install a lift-and-slide door in the living room instead of two double doors side by side, each with two panels that open inward (I don’t know the exact term right now).
In the living room, these are the only windows, and on the ground floor there is only one more window in the open kitchen.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a lift-and-slide door compared to two double doors, especially in relation to a KfW55 building standard?

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a lift-and-slide door compared to two double doors, especially in relation to a KfW55 building standard?
Advantages:
Space-saving when open
Modern appearance
With sufficient opening width, better connection between indoors and outdoors
Disadvantages:
More expensive
Requires a minimum width to be truly effective
Possibly complicated opening mechanisms (especially if it is a lift-and-slide or tilt-and-slide door), which may not be easy for everyone to operate quickly (children) and can sometimes be prone to malfunctions
Very heavy if of a "worthwhile" size (difficult for children)
Risk of pinching, as attention must be paid to different parts (at the bottom), which is often not yet familiar to users...

Ok, thanks.
This will just be a lift-and-slide door.
The width will be around 5 meters (16 feet), so 2.5 meters (8 feet) per panel.
Additional cost from the builder: 5000€.
Are there no significant disadvantages regarding KfW55?
Is a lift-and-slide door prone to defects?
We definitely prefer the lift-and-slide door as well—more modern and offering more window area.

In terms of size, it will even get approval from @11ant.
However, it will be very difficult and, of course, a strain on the entire mechanism. If the quality is good, according to my father-in-law, it is not necessarily more prone to defects than "regular" windows.
The installation will be a nightmare, but you don’t have to do it yourself.

The high additional cost was explained to me as well.
They say that everything needs to be reinforced because the lift-and-slide door will become very heavy for us (triple glazing due to KfW55 standard).
But once it is installed, it can be opened and closed normally, right?
Installation is not my concern 🙂
Do you think the extra cost of 5000€ is reasonable, or is that way too expensive?
Installing it later would, of course, be much more expensive.

I was also given an explanation for the high additional cost.

Installing it later would, of course, be even more expensive. It’s hard to say since quality also plays a role. Our lift-and-slide door (width: 3m (10 feet)) costs about €1500 extra.
