ᐅ Does vinyl deform under intense sunlight?

Hello everyone!

I got a second quote today regarding vinyl planks. Since my house will have a strong south-facing orientation and floor-to-ceiling windows, vinyl was discouraged because it is “not suitable” for this application.

Temperatures of “up to 70°C” (158°F) (nice reference to the cooling thread!) are expected there. The MANUFACTURER does not provide a warranty for this type of location. The first supplier didn’t mention anything about this.
Is that because they didn’t know about the windows, they are careless, or is the whole thing simply not true?

Who here has experience with vinyl warping in these conditions?

Okay, so vinyl is basically—what exactly? 😀

It’s simply PVC. Since the name "PVC" has a negative image from a marketing perspective, it was renamed. The term "luxury vinyl flooring" was added as well. At the same time, it’s possible to charge more for it...

It’s like how Raiders became Twix—nothing else really changed! 😉

PS: When PVC burns, it releases hydrogen chloride, dioxins, and also aromatic compounds. That means do not breathe in the gases under any circumstances, and a full remediation of the apartment will be necessary!

Depending on the type of vinyl flooring, it can warp even without exposure to sunlight. This is currently happening at a good friend's place in the living room. It looks like cheap laminate, with the edges slightly lifting. Investing in quality hardwood flooring is definitely money well spent.

How could this happen? Not due to sunlight. What else could it be?

Heat, humidity. For floating installation, an insufficiently sized perimeter gap.

But that was a relocation as a personal experiment, right?

No, a professional company, but over 5 years ago. Still, an absurdly short lifespan for a floor. It feels like walking on plastic... nothing compared to hardwood flooring.
