Hello everyone,
we are currently considering how we want/could design the exterior appearance of our house. It starts with a new coat of paint and some minor repairs to the facade and gutter. Then we thought about removing the rough plaster completely and giving the house a smoother (more modern) render. Of course, that changes the cost significantly. The wood in the entrance area and under the roof overhang also needs painting. The question here is whether to keep the natural wood tone or switch to white. Of course, that is all a matter of personal taste...

The appearance of our terrace railing is also a matter of taste. We might have chosen a more subtle design if we had bought it... 😎 It is an aluminum substructure that is basically indestructible. We are still thinking about whether to replace the railing at some point. That’s why everything should look more “harmonious” in the end, if you know what I mean 🙂
When someone from the painting company came to inspect, their first words were definitely to keep the plaster as it is, since you probably won’t find anything easier to maintain, and you can also do a lot with the paint.

Here are photos with the old wooden windows:

Wood beams, gutter, plaster wall, and wood ceiling visible under the roof overhang.

The front door will be replaced in a few weeks. The new door is white and features three square glass elements:

White house facade with wooden door, glass window with heart motif, and outdoor lamp.

Yellow tape measure held vertically against rough white wall next to smooth door frame.

Ideas... suggestions... opinions... are welcome 😀

I sometimes have this thought when I see some new country-style houses with red brick cladding where smooth plastic windows with internal grilles have been installed.

For example, I find this one quite successful – modern yet country-style:

Brick house with red roof, white door and windows; front garden with planter boxes.

The door is quite modern, though. Clash of styles?

And if you paint the railing, roof overhang, and wooden beams in the red color from the garden shed and the house white

It is well known that whatever you like is allowed. I often see houses with bold colors and think – it looks great, something I wouldn’t have imagined myself.

For your house, I would probably try using climbing plants. Virginia creeper, wisteria, ivy. I find it beautiful and fitting for the style. Of course, you have to be okay with spiders. We had that for several years – including a bird’s nest on the windowsill after a two-week vacation.

Our current house is clad in larch wood. That could work for yours as well.

Neither of these options is really “modern,” of course.

A light-colored plaster finish would also be possible, along with colored accents around the windows. There are many options to consider.

Thanks anyway for the exchange of ideas. I hope I was able to clarify our position regarding the choice of windows 🙂 Overall, we felt there was too much visible wood, and we would like to tone that down a bit, though not completely remove it. And again: this is not supposed to become a townhouse or anything like that 🙂

That’s why I’m not entirely opposed to the green railing at the moment. As mentioned, it’s an aluminum railing and still relatively new, although the brown color of the balustrade/handrail has already faded quite a bit. Personally, I wouldn’t have been so “bold” in choosing the color and would have gone for something neutral.

A light-colored render and painted areas around the windows would also be an option. So many possibilities there.

That has already been discussed as well. The advantage is that if we don’t like it, it can be repainted. What we have also seen is that the render around the windows was smooth for about 10cm (5 inches), while the rest was coarser textured.

Wouldn’t the facade suffer from that?

No, unfortunately nothing substantial. The plaster simply needs to be redone once the vegetation is removed. With wisteria and ivy, be careful around the downpipes, as they can get crushed. Also, don’t let the plants grow into the roof. An annual inspection is sufficient, and nothing will happen then.
