Hello, my property has two access points. One is a gravel driveway that only I am allowed to use, and the other is a second traffic area connected to a public road. I also own this second traffic area. The official access, especially for guests, is intended to be via this private traffic area. I have been thinking a lot about the pathway layout. The architect recommends going all the way around the house (see attached image, red pathway). However, I often need to go to the public road via the traffic area myself, for example, to take out the trash bins (which are located in the outbuilding shown on the left) or to empty the mailbox. The blue access path seems more practical to me. I am torn between the two. Do you have any other ideas for the pathway layout?
By the way, south is to the right, west is at the bottom of the image. The distance to the western property boundary from the house is about 6 m (20 feet), and from the end of the terrace to the western boundary about 2–3 m (6.5–10 feet).

I wouldn’t create a circular driveway. You always need to consider how often you have visitors and whether you can easily access the terrace and turn around.

pagoni202021 Dec 2020 09:04Can’t you just use the gravel driveway (shorter) for both visitors/outsiders and any cars? Following the red line would make you dizzy by the time you reach the door, plus it goes all around the house, which leaves no privacy on the terrace and causes disturbance.
Why do visitors need to drive all the way up to the house/property? Parking on the street is usually possible, and since visits aren’t that frequent, someone could also use the gravel driveway if needed. I definitely wouldn’t want to build over the property like that, especially not the important area around the terrace. If you place the trash bins there or pick up mail, it could become a better footpath.
You don’t have people around all the time, and people get used to what you set as the norm. Suddenly having someone stand on the terrace would be a no-go for me, so I’d use the back side for that (or have it used). I’d see the blue line as a “service path.” The red line looks more like a race track 🤨
