Hello,
I plan to renovate an apartment this winter that has been lived in for several years by a young man who occasionally used various types of cannabis here. My question: Has anyone ever renovated such an apartment or painted walls in a similar condition? Can I handle this easily with good quality paint, or will I need to use ozone treatment and remove all the wallpaper? I would be very grateful for any experiences shared. Thanks!

What problem do you or the apartment have? Water damage? Mold? Does it smell like cannabis? Or something else?

Well, he did put in quite some effort. The apartment is pretty worn down. There’s a strong smell of cannabis, and I need to redo the floors as well as the ceilings anyway. Otherwise, there’s no water damage or mold. The main issue is really these lingering odors. I’m not sure if simply painting and wallpapering will be enough to deal with them.

I wouldn’t rely on just painting, but I think if you remove the old wallpaper and apply new one, the smell should go away. Also, remove all textiles. So if there’s carpet installed, take it out.

That goes without saying. I will have to completely overhaul the apartment anyway, since it needs renovation. However, because I have applied simple textured wallpaper and all of it is in surprisingly good condition, I had hoped to at least avoid removing the wallpaper. The question is how far issues like this can penetrate through the wallpaper into the wall. I was hoping to find someone here who has had a similar experience.

And what about those little air fresheners for the car?
smile and smoke a little joint in the morning, what’s better than not having any at all all day.
