ᐅ What is the appropriate door size for a newly built double garage?

Hello everyone,

we are planning to build a double garage with external dimensions of 6.46 x 8.75 meters (21.2 x 28.7 feet).
The internal width of the garage is 5.80 meters (19.0 feet).

The garage door is 5.04 meters (16.5 feet) wide.

We are unsure if a door width of 5 meters (16.4 feet) is enough to comfortably park two medium-sized cars. What are your experiences? Is this size sufficient? If anyone has a similar double garage, pictures with two parked cars would be great.

Best regards

As large as possible and sectional door opening upwards, optionally with a separate entrance door depending on use.

We have a 7x7m (23x23 ft) garage with a 5.5m (18 ft) wide sectional door. The width is more than enough for two regular cars (in our case, a compact car and a van). If I imagine reducing the side space by 25cm (10 inches) on each side... that would still work. The wider it is, the more comfortable. We can reverse straight in without having to be extra careful and don’t need to maneuver inside the garage (so both of us park backwards, and the total width easily allows for that).

I never really know what to make of isolated width questions, as they don’t make much sense: the driveway situation (straight approach or turning with an even or odd number of moves, level or sloped up or down) plays a major role. When width issues are brought up without first clarifying the parking direction, all I can do is shake my head.

We back in at a 90° angle, usually in 2 maneuvers, rarely 4. The driveway slopes upward, with about 3m (10 feet) of space to the street.

We ordered a 5.5 m wide (18 feet) garage door from the general contractor.

Background: both cars are to be parked driving in forward. We used the classic method of hanging a tennis ball from the ceiling to the windshield to measure the optimal parking depth.

At the back wall of the garage, behind the two cars, we planned a shelf that allows you to park with the hood underneath—meaning the lower part, up to about waist height, has no shelves.

With a width of 5.5 m (18 feet), you get a comfortable space, so that parking (especially for a woman) is easy and stress-free.
