Hello everyone,

we are planning to build a double garage with external dimensions of 6.46 x 8.75 meters (21.2 x 28.7 feet).
The internal width of the garage is 5.80 meters (19.0 feet).

The garage door is 5.04 meters (16.5 feet) wide.

We are unsure if a door width of 5 meters (16.4 feet) is enough to comfortably park two medium-sized cars. What are your experiences? Is this size sufficient? If anyone has a similar double garage, pictures with two parked cars would be great.

Best regards

I don’t see any reason for concern regarding the width itself, but the location is just as important as the width; and the intended use also plays a role. Is the garage door centered, and are vehicles parked front-in/front-out, rear-in/front-out, or rear-in/rear-out …?

Whether only the driver gets in and out of the garage or if it becomes an event for the entire household makes a big difference. Nowadays, the term “double garage” often doesn’t necessarily mean that both parking spaces are used for everyday vehicles. One space might be used just for storage, children’s vehicles, or a seasonal vehicle, which is quite common today.

The gate is positioned exactly in the center. I cannot say anything yet about the parking direction.

So, the habits of the future spouse are still unknown?

From my point of view, that would suggest right/left parking, but in any case, it nearly defines a fixed choice.

In my view, that would support r/v, but in any case it implies an (almost) definite decision.

It sounds like only r/v would be possible. That would be fine for us, as long as there is enough space.

The problem is not the gate, but the interior dimensions. Why are you choosing such thick walls? Even 5.8m (19 feet) would be sufficient; we can park a Duster and a Passat side by side, but it could be wider—there just wasn’t enough land available.
