Hello everyone,

we are currently planning to build our house and are considering including a large garage.

The question is: about $20,000 for a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage or about $23,000 for a 6x7 meter (20x23 foot) garage? What experiences have you had with your garages?

1 station wagon
1 small or mid-size car
2 sets of tires
1 lawn mower
3 trash bins
2 bicycles
and all the other stuff that tends to accumulate

However, we also have a basement, so the garage shouldn’t turn into a storage for trash bins.

What do you think? Is a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage enough? Opinions seem to vary...

The garage roof can be greened, and rainwater can be used for irrigation...
@Bookstar has already mentioned some advantages. For example, I don’t know anyone who would voluntarily give up a garage. Whether the car is inexpensive or not, it also helps maintain property value.
Personally, I hate dirty cars.
A carport is only a makeshift solution.
Bird droppings can quickly etch into the paint. If the car is parked in direct sunlight, it happens even faster.
If the budget allows, always go for a garage.

Always consider the interior dimensions when planning a garage! A prefabricated garage usually has thinner walls compared to a masonry garage. If possible, add a storage room at the back. However, this will increase the total length to around 9 m (30 feet).

There is nothing worse in a new housing development than streets being blocked by cars because the garages are too small or cluttered with other items like trampolines, trash bins, etc.

A practical solution is: 2 garage parking spaces plus 2 (full-size) parking spaces in front of the garage. This way, up to 4 cars can be parked on the property itself.

A solid solution is: 2 garage parking spaces plus 2 (full-size) parking spaces in front of the garage. That way, up to 4 cars can be parked on your own property.

The question we’re also asking ourselves: Is it worth paying extra to have a garage that’s 1 or 2 meters (3 or 6 feet) wider?
Additionally, it has to fit on the plot of land! That’s not so easy with our lot.

I also wonder what kind of "stuff" you currently need to store in the garage?

For lawnmowers, garden tools, etc., I can build a garden shed for about 1,000 (currency) that’s perfectly sufficient.

I can also fit 2 bicycles and 2 sets of tires in a 6 x 6 m (20 x 20 feet) garage.

I strongly suspect that the bigger the garage, the more "junk" accumulates. When I look at some garages in new housing areas, I wonder why the garage was even built. Sometimes in a 6 x 8 m (20 x 26 feet) garage there’s only one car and the rest is completely cluttered. I wouldn’t spend 30,000 (currency) on a garage like that. In that case, I might as well build a simple carport for 1,000 (currency). I find that kind of ridiculous.

A garage should hold 2 cars, bicycles, winter tires, a ladder, and that’s it. The rest belongs in the basement or a garden shed.

Of course, if you have money to burn and plenty of space, you can build a 7 x 10 m (23 x 33 feet) garage, but do you really need that?

And what happened to the three garbage bins mentioned in the original post?

I can fit those in as well. However, there is still plenty of space behind the garage for a small shelter or something similar.

I can even fit that one in.
Well, then the decision is basically made, isn’t it? What more can we advise here about bigger garages and enough parking space?
