Hello everyone,
we are currently planning to build our house and are considering including a large garage.
The question is: about $20,000 for a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage or about $23,000 for a 6x7 meter (20x23 foot) garage? What experiences have you had with your garages?
1 station wagon
1 small or mid-size car
2 sets of tires
1 lawn mower
3 trash bins
2 bicycles
and all the other stuff that tends to accumulate
However, we also have a basement, so the garage shouldn’t turn into a storage for trash bins.
What do you think? Is a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage enough? Opinions seem to vary...

Sometimes a 6x8m (20x26 ft) garage is just filled with junk except for one car? I wouldn’t spend 30k on a garage for that. I could just build a simple carport for 1k. Then the junk decays faster, freeing up space for both cars again.

The question we’re also asking ourselves: Is it worth paying extra for a garage that is 1 or 2 meters (3 or 6 feet) wider? I advised to add width rather than length because of the access corridor for the bins. I often think about taking the bins out on days when the car doesn’t need to be moved at all. Having to pull the car out just to avoid hitting the bins or to carefully maneuver past them seems avoidable to me. That’s why investing in that extra meter in width seems the most worthwhile.
