Hello everyone,

we are currently planning to build our house and are considering including a large garage.

The question is: about $20,000 for a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage or about $23,000 for a 6x7 meter (20x23 foot) garage? What experiences have you had with your garages?

1 station wagon
1 small or mid-size car
2 sets of tires
1 lawn mower
3 trash bins
2 bicycles
and all the other stuff that tends to accumulate

However, we also have a basement, so the garage shouldn’t turn into a storage for trash bins.

What do you think? Is a 6x6 meter (20x20 foot) garage enough? Opinions seem to vary...

The larger the garage, the stronger the tendency to fill it up completely with stuff.

As mentioned, we are building with a basement, so much of the storage will likely be moved down into the basement.

Having is better than needing. We have 6m x 9m (20 ft x 30 ft) and it is truly a dream.

I have an exterior size of 9 x 6.50 meters (29.5 x 21.3 feet) and am currently planning an additional tool shed for the lawn mower, aerators, garden tools, and so on.

As large as possible. We have 8x7 m (26x23 ft), and that's great. We also have a basement and a huge garden shed.

You simply need it, and it isn’t cluttered with junk but filled with all sorts of useful things.

We also find that with widths under 6.50–7m (21.3–23 ft), it becomes very difficult with today’s car widths to get in and out, park, or potentially lift a child out, etc. You should try to find a space and measure it when your cars are parked side by side!

I’d say neither – I would go with 7 x 6 meters (23 x 20 feet) according to the list of contents, with a two-part door.
