Hello,

we still have a small portion of the contingency buffer left for a little extra feature.

We have the choice between the following two options, and we want to pick one:

- Exterior venetian blinds (also called louvered blinds) on two fixed floor-to-ceiling window units next to the front door (south-facing, no roller shutters, frosted glass). Cost including control system and wind sensor is about 1350€ (approximately $1,450).
- Fingerprint scanner on the front door. Total cost is about 1200€ (approximately $1,290).

We are having a hard time deciding. Both have advantages, and we could also choose to skip both if needed.

What would you choose?

What kind of window coverings do the other windows on the south side have? Roller shutters or venetian blinds?

Best regards,

It’s really convenient, and the scanner has already been very helpful a few times when our little children accidentally locked me out of the house.

Pff... that just leads to tantrums and eventually the kids learn their lesson.

On the topic: definitely venetian blinds.

I wouldn’t choose either:

- I find venetian blinds too office-like / cold / industrial / suited for government buildings… They remind me of my school days when the blinds would automatically go down at the first rays of sun and go back up at the slightest wind. I just don’t have a positive impression of them.

- I wouldn’t buy fingerprint scanners either. I would always prefer a mechanical lock. Any IT or digital interface makes your house vulnerable, especially at the front door. I wouldn’t trust any manufacturer to have fixed all the bugs (errors) in a digital lock. That’s why I would always choose a good, solid, “secure” mechanical lock.

**Edit: What’s actually wrong with sun-activated blinds that roll down automatically? Of course, not all the way down, otherwise you’d really have to turn the lights on. But about three-quarters down or so. This way, you’d end up letting in about the same amount of sun as with venetian blinds?**

Blinds block more light with the same shading effect. It simply gets darker.
A good alternative could also be an overhang.

I believe that for both roller blinds and venetian blinds there is always an adjustment where they let in the same amount of light.
For example, that would be with roller blinds lowered about 3/4 and venetian blinds fully down but tilted at xx %. Both then darken to the same degree and thus provide equal protection from sun and heat.

*Edit: A permanent overhang always blocks the sun. So during transitional seasons, when you can save on heating, it also reduces how much your house warms up.
