ᐅ Garage door – one large or two smaller ones?

Hello,
I would like to hear your opinions and experiences.
Initially, our garage was planned with two doors, as shown in the picture. However, during the further planning phase, we decided to go for one large door instead. This choice was partly for aesthetic reasons and partly because we thought that if repairs on the car or similar work need to be done, or if we ever need to park a larger vehicle, it would be easier to drive straight into the garage without a supporting post in the middle.
Our construction manager has raised concerns that with a door width of at least 5.50 meters (18 feet), the slats might sag after several years, and the wear on the tracks where the door runs would be significantly higher due to the size and weight of the door.
We are now unsure what to do. What are your experiences with wide garage doors? It will be a Hörmann door. What have you installed? What advantages and disadvantages have you noticed? What are the benefits of two single doors, and what are the drawbacks? Have you had any technical issues with a door width of around 6 meters (20 feet)?
Kind regards

Even if there are actually two cars inside: after completion, these are rarely two vehicles suitable for evening wear – instead, the worn-out Mondeo station wagon, purchased for DIY work, usually has to wait a while longer until the credit line allows for a “proper” replacement. The gate opening to reveal a Mercedes E-Class convertible and a Macan mostly only happens in promotional brochures.

Hello, from a technical perspective, I can only agree that for large doors over 4.5 meters (15 feet) clear opening width, all reputable manufacturers supply industrial-grade doors in terms of panels, rollers, and frames. Doors with a 6-meter (20 feet) clear opening width are not problematic, provided they are not from a low-budget range. Fortunately, doors of the size typically found in a double garage are rarely available in hardware stores.

If you need advice or a recommendation for a professional company with certified installers (proven experts), I am happy to assist you with guidance and support.

Kind regards,
Your door and drive technology expert, SvBitzer

Thank you all for your opinions. Yes, I think both options have their pros and cons. The site manager also mentioned the possibility of wide doors that open sideways. It’s hard to describe, but basically, the tracks would be positioned along the right or left wall. This way, you would have the advantage of opening the door only partially, while still maintaining the appearance of a large door. My immediate thought was that a screw or small object could easily fall into the track, and then it would cause problems when opening it. @SvBitzer, can you share your experience with these types of doors? And thanks for your offer.

Best regards

Side-sliding doors are used when the garage is too low but has enough width. Depending on the model, you lose 15-30 cm (6-12 inches) of space on the side. Also, you cannot use the wall for storage or other purposes.

Therefore, I recommend an insulated industrial sectional door with a high-speed tubular motor.

There is a door manufacturer near us. A 5-meter (16.4-foot) door with full features costs less than 4000€.

Does it come with the storage room equipment included? (Fully equipped) @rick2018
Joking aside: Hörmann mentions that doors around 5 meters (16 feet) wide and in dark colors can deform under full sunlight. However, they return to their original shape as they cool down.

I would still recommend going for the larger door. I have a garage and carport side by side, so two driveways with a central post, but for ... reasons, I would have preferred a different solution. Now it’s too late. :mad _O

Leaning towards the larger gate as well. Shouldn’t this now cost 3000 euros more than the two smaller gates?
