We have just received a quote for earthworks including removal and the complete installation of the pipes. The amount is over 40,000€ (over $43,000). We were completely shocked when we found out about this sum.

A concrete slab will be installed, which is already included in our general construction contract. However, the neighbors had to add a support to prevent their excavation pit from collapsing. Since our plot is in the middle, we are allowed to excavate into the adjacent properties.

Yes, but those are the tricky additional costs, which also include the earthworks. Did you not request a quote for that beforehand?

We received a cost estimate that included earthworks budgeted at 25,000.

If you’re lucky, someone nearby might be looking for excavation material and could take it off your hands (saving disposal costs, transport, etc. still apply). I’m personally still searching for material myself, but we’re almost 100km apart.

Could you possibly list the quote in more detail?

For example:
Item 1: Excavation 100m³ (130 cubic yards) 5,000€
Item 2: Disposal 100m³ (130 cubic yards) 15,000€

Then you can roughly check the prices. Maybe also include the house dimensions (including basement depth) so the volume can be calculated. For utility connections, if you’re lucky one trench is enough. Is sewage included as well? Does it cover connections/pipes/covers/etc.?

From whom? And what does that person say about the 40,000 now?

What exactly is the question in this thread?
