We have just received a quote for earthworks including removal and the complete installation of the pipes. The amount is over 40,000€ (over $43,000). We were completely shocked when we found out about this sum.

What exactly is the question in this thread?
Probably whether the price is justified or "normal."
But for that, specific figures from the offer would be needed.

I believe there are only a few here who have had positive experiences with excavation volume estimates. The problem is that the 40,000 (currency) might be too high, but it will most likely be somewhat more. My architect calculated: 300 cubic meters (cbm) of excavation to be removed.

The earthworks contractor on site just grinned cheekily and said, better double that. In the end, he removed 500 cubic meters (cbm), and fortunately, my neighbor needed 150 cubic meters (cbm) and I was able to store another 150 cubic meters (cbm) with him (which was also calculated for backfilling). The material loosens up and ends up being much more than expected. Furthermore, trucks don’t like to be fully loaded to maximum capacity. So you pay for the truck to carry 10 cubic meters (cbm), but it actually only transports 8 cubic meters (cbm). With 30 trucks, that adds up quite a bit...

Don't shock me now.

Not a small amount, even with a basement. But nobody here has a crystal ball.

Our general contractor had estimated 21,000 (21T), but I personally included a buffer and calculated 33,000 (33T) in the financing plan. The lowest current offer is 58,000 (58T) for basement excavation, backfilling, and a longer sewage connection.

We were also shocked, but civil engineering has always been a tricky surprise, especially when a basement is involved.

Offer too expensive? -> Get another quote.

What’s strange is that the neighbor to our right supposedly doesn’t need it, according to his excavation contractor, while ours says it is necessary. The disposal site would be the same. I don’t know who to believe. Of course, both are competitors.

What does the next “excavation contractor” of the neighbor say that you mentioned in the neighboring thread? What did the neighbor pay?
