Hello everyone!
We got an American Staffordshire Terrier specifically to protect our future home... but it turns out he would rather cuddle any intruder than raise an alarm when someone enters the property uninvited...
So, Plan B is needed!
(I hope the irony was clear—we knew right away that our buddy is a really sweet dog! ... :-) )
We have been considering some security cameras. Just for peace of mind. There have been several recent break-ins and car vandalism incidents among friends and family...
Does anyone have specific recommendations for security camera systems?
It should be as simple as possible and not cost a fortune. We were thinking about 4 outdoor cameras with night vision.
A friend got the predecessors (from 7 years ago) of a Goliath HDCVI set and is very happy with it. The whole set, including 4 outdoor cameras, plenty of cables, and a recorder, came to just under €300. Is that something worth considering?
It would then be a standalone system...
Is there anything like that available for a standard home network? Something that runs over Ethernet cables?
I’m curious about your recommendations.

Is there something like this possibly for a regular home network? So that it all runs over network cables?Yes, simply use IP cameras with an NVR, for example AXIS, Hikvision, Mobotix, etc., with PoE, then you can easily use the existing LAN for that. However, it's best to run it on a separate network managed by the NVR independently from the main network.
This is a complex topic.
With cameras, price often reflects quality.
Axis is highly recommended. What exactly needs to be monitored? Installation should not be too high, consider angle and distance...
If you have a NAS, footage can be stored there (e.g., Synology or Qnap). POE switches should be securely housed and powered via a separate power supply (UPS).
Cameras with good motion detection are expensive. Motion detection on the NAS requires processing power and is not at the same level.
Good cameras typically cost between 200€ and 1000€ each.
In general, cameras are part of a security concept and not a standalone solution.
A dog creates significantly more deterrence (even if it’s a cuddly protector 😉 ).
Windows and doors should be at least RC2 rated. You need to be a tougher target than your neighbor. However, fear is a poor advisor.
Since you apparently don’t want to invest the budget for a proper solution, I would rather advise against it. At most, install decoys.
Having a dog already provides sufficient deterrence.

They don’t really deter them; they often attract attention instead.
More important is securing windows and doors to keep them from getting inside in the first place.
What do you expect from surveillance? Of course, the police are happy to take the footage afterward, but usually, it only shows shadowy figures 😉

If cameras help you with that, then that’s absolutely the right approach. My wife thinks lighting is important, so we have motion-activated lights around the house. Noise, such as from a siren, also acts as a deterrent.
Currently, we live in an area that could be considered a hotspot for burglaries – the outskirts of a commuter town near Düsseldorf, with excellent motorway access for a quick getaway to the Netherlands. On average, there is a burglary every six months in our terraced housing area with around 50 homes. Neither we nor our immediate neighbors (with a dog) have been targeted yet, but others have been hit three times already.
The dog is really great,
