Hello dear experts!
I would like to hear your opinions on the topic of underfloor heating. My parents have underfloor heating in the hallway and kitchen of their house. When they built the house, they were told not to install underfloor heating in the bedroom or children’s room, so there is none in those rooms. What do you think about this? Is it true that underfloor heating is not recommended for bedrooms? And if so, why?

Best regards

No, that’s nonsense. It depends on when your parents built their house. In the past, underfloor heating systems were different (in some cases) than they are today. Back then, they were designed mainly to keep feet warm, whereas today they are used to heat entire houses.

Guess what happens in today’s well-insulated houses if you don’t have heating in the bedroom... right, mold.

Not only ventilation but also heating is important. In our apartment (ETICS), during the first month when there were below-zero temperatures, we didn’t heat the bedroom. The consequence came 1.5 months later: mold stains in the upper corner and along the entire window wall.

I believe the alternative isn’t no heating, but rather radiators. And there is something to that. It’s difficult to keep the underfloor heating, let’s say, at 16 degrees Celsius (61°F). It always makes the bedroom too warm. So we end up opening the window and heating the garden as well. With a radiator, you just set the thermostat to one and that’s it. If you want it a bit warmer, you turn it to two, and it warms up quickly. So, for bedrooms, I actually find radiators better. Unfortunately, no one advised us that way.

That’s not really possible with every heating system, is it? With gas, you might be able to connect a radiator, but with a heat pump?

Thanks for the answers! Yes, it was quite a while ago when my parents built their house. I believe that the main reason back then was really to have warm feet. My parents definitely did not use underfloor heating to heat the whole house. Maybe it’s just too warm for sleeping with underfloor heating. So far, I have always heated with radiators myself, but I find underfloor heating comfortable because the floor is naturally not so cold.
