Hello everyone!

I’m writing this here because it’s somehow related to floor plans. A few months ago, a civil engineer I know said that all toilet windows next to entrance doors should be bricked up. Since then, I’ve been looking more closely at floor plans on this forum with that statement in mind.

A lot of people plan a toilet window next to the entrance door. Is this just the personal opinion of a perfectionist? What do you think?

By the way, the term "guest toilet" seems strange to me, since the family uses it daily and guests occasionally. I only learned this term here on the forum.

And why should they be bricked up?

Usually, a guest bathroom fits well in that location.

What are the better alternatives?

The guest toilet next to the entrance almost comes naturally. Likewise, a window positioned perpendicular to the door is usually more practical. Besides, this creates a certain symmetry on the exterior, which helps when planning the upper floor.

I understand the point of the objection. If you were to design a house solely around an ideal guest toilet, it would probably be located elsewhere. However, in the priority list between living room, kitchen, stairs, and possibly a study/guest room, the toilet usually ranks quite low and therefore needs to be placed where there is available space in the end.

I agree with Fuchur and don’t see the problem; frosted glass or something similar for the windows should be fine.

This is usually due to practical reasons and may be part of the traditional German architectural style.

Have you ever noticed that kitchen windows have often been planned for many years, even decades, to face the street, the main entrance, or the courtyard? This way, you can always see who is coming. Take a look around yourself.

I still see it that way today. The kitchen window should face the front.
