Hello,
we are planning a square townhouse (10.49 x 10.49 meters (34.4 x 34.4 feet) plus a rear bay window). According to the building plan, we have to have a hip roof with a 28° pitch. Now we have the choice of which direction to place the small ridge on the roof. So either it faces the front (hip roof towards the street and entrance door) or the front shows a pyramid roof and the ridge faces the garden, with the hip roof visible from the side. Which option looks better? How would you do it?
Best regards,
Sabine

Do you perhaps have a photo of your roof so that it can be visualized more easily? Because a 28-degree pitch seems a bit steep for an urban villa. No, it definitely isn’t. But please tell me which floor plan the roof needs to fit in your case.
Regarding the original question (RIP): I have never seen in practice that a ridge is strictly required but at the same time left open as to how it should be oriented. Such a specification is usually given to align house grids consistently.

We submitted a building application with a pyramid roof. The building authority demands “any,” “arbitrarily small” ridge or alternatively the application for a variance from the development plan (with extra fees). The orientation of the houses is left open within the building zones.
The exterior dimensions are 10.5m x 9.5m with a roof overhang of about 80cm (31.5 inches) all around.
It was the same for us... The zoning plan requires a gable or hipped roof.
Architect's statement: a pyramid roof is a type of hipped roof.
Building authority: No, the hipped roof must have a ridge.
We have now chosen a ridge of about one meter (39 inches).
