Hello,
we are planning a square townhouse (10.49 x 10.49 meters (34.4 x 34.4 feet) plus a rear bay window). According to the building plan, we have to have a hip roof with a 28° pitch. Now we have the choice of which direction to place the small ridge on the roof. So either it faces the front (hip roof towards the street and entrance door) or the front shows a pyramid roof and the ridge faces the garden, with the hip roof visible from the side. Which option looks better? How would you do it?
Best regards,
Sabine

The exterior dimensions are 10.5 m by 9.5 m with a roof overhang of about 80 cm (31 inches) all around. And the shape is a rectangle without any bay windows or similar extensions?
In that case, I would simply let the ridge form naturally by having the same roof pitch on both the lengthwise and widthwise roof surfaces, meaning it would be as long as the difference between the side lengths.

Don’t worry, the roof pitch looks really good. You actually have to stand about 20m (65 feet) away from the house to see the roof properly; if you’re standing right in front on the street, you can’t really see it. I need to figure out how to manage with a photo—I tried yesterday, but the file was too large. On page 107 in the house photo thread, I have an old picture.

There will be a bay window at the front entrance area, about 2.70m (9 feet) In width, I assume, and not part of the main roof structure?
