Hello,

in our small corner house with 300 m² (3,230 sq ft) of land, we have a raised garden bed along the left side of the house next to the garden. It measures 10 meters by 2 meters by 60 cm (2.0 m by 6.6 ft by 60 cm (24 inches) high). We would like to remove it to have more lawn space. Does anyone have experience with the approximate cost of something like this? Along the edge of the raised bed, there is a path about 1 meter (3.3 ft) wide running alongside the house. The edge of the bed bordering the path is secured and cemented with stones.

So, this means breaking away the stones, dismantling the bed somehow, and having it removed (I estimate about 12 cubic meters (15.7 cubic yards)).

What could this cost? The other end of the raised bed leads to the hedge and towards the fence line.

I would avoid removing it, whether it’s grass or flowers/shrubs.
This strip is what gives structure to the edge and makes it look more valuable.
You won’t get more grass than the thickness of the retaining wall, about 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12 inches), anyway.
And then there’s the hedge, which is probably raised as well.
If you leave anything there, you won’t gain any extra space. Additionally, the roots might suffer, and over time the privacy screen could turn brown.
From my own experience, you can’t really turn a narrow strip like that (ERH or DH strip) into a play or sitting garden.

Otherwise, I would just list it for pickup only. 🙂

My thoughts on the pictures:
I would appreciate such a clear, neat boundary. It keeps much less dirt from being brought into the house.
For now, leave the wall as it is, cut the hedge back significantly more, and design the area according to your preferences.
You might then realize that removing the stone wall doesn’t actually create more space and isn’t necessary at all.

Hmm, I would only remove the section next to the trampoline and shape it somehow so that children can easily climb up there. Apart from that, I would remove the awful hedge, as I find it creates a cramped feeling...

cut the hedge back much more

If I’m not mistaken, that’s Thuja. Cutting it back that much will kill it. Which, on the other hand, might not be the worst thing 😉
I would also keep the step there and try to incorporate it into the design. There’s nothing more boring than flat, level lawns, no matter the size.
