Hello,
Gardening is a complete mystery to me. Now I have the following problem: I live in a house where the owner can no longer do any work but still wants the garden maintained. However, a lot has become overgrown by now. I would take care of it, but it’s difficult to clear everything out with just gloves, a shovel, and small pruning shears.
Along the paths and walls of the house, the owner has planted several spots a bit informally. So, I have everything from small trees and shrubs to large and small plants.
As far as I know, all the gardening tools one might need are available, but I have no idea what I actually need. Are there any gardening experts here who could give me some guidance on the best approach?
I thought it would be best to trim everything back to what’s necessary and dig out the rest, but what should I use for trimming, and are there any tips for digging? Or do I really need to remove everything with a shovel?
I already asked the experienced homeowner, but he is over 90 years old and unfortunately struggles with some “age-related mood swings.” I’m not getting any useful advice from him anymore, and sometimes I think that although he used to enjoy doing it, he wasn’t really knowledgeable or efficient when it comes to gardening.
I would be very grateful for any helpful tips.
Basically, I assume I have access to all kinds of gardening tools, even if they aren’t the most common ones for home gardening, as I know a few other garden owners who can provide additional tools if needed.
Best regards

Get rid of it and just put grass over itExactly. What’s the point of all the fuss if you don’t even want to do it?
Yes, definitely get rid of it!!! That’s exactly the point—how to remove that stuff quickly and easily :-D After that, there will definitely be lawn, bark mulch, or the stone paths will be expanded. We have so many corners here that need to be managed; some just need to look better, while others should be used more effectively.

Did I miss something?
The owner... So you must be the tenant.
The owner can hire a gardener, or you can take over the work for them, whether paid or unpaid. But what you must not do is destroy the garden or uproot the plants.
Even if you don’t feel like working... A garden area usually involves several thousand euros, plus something priceless: time, often 1 to 2 generations.
So if you have no idea, just leave it alone.
The owner is a relative (as you know, family situations can be different) and quite elderly. For the most part, we can do whatever we want and actually have to. That was his wish before we moved in. However, the owner has increasingly neglected "his" garden responsibilities. Because of this, and since we now have two small children aged 14 years and 2 months, we can no longer look the other way and have to take over everything.
I know what the garden looked like 15 years ago from photos (I have been with my husband for 10 years). Back then, I would have agreed with you – time, money, passion. None of that remains anymore...
I myself am 200% a city person; for me, the nicest garden is just plain pavement, and I love greenery most on my plate next to a juicy steak. My husband is a complete homebody. He enjoys mowing the lawn and occasionally planting some salad, but he rarely likes doing anything else (which is why low-maintenance is perfect).
