Ramon_Serano11 Aug 2017 08:43Hello everyone,
We are building a small house along with a double garage of about 45 sqm (485 sq ft). We plan to install fluorescent tubes in the garage to ensure it is well-lit whenever any work is done there. There is direct access from the garage to the house, and we want the lights to turn on automatically when we enter the garage, for example, to get into the car, and then turn off by themselves. The same should happen when we come home by car and only exit after the garage door has closed again.
Actually, I would like to install a lamp with a motion sensor next to the fluorescent tubes. However, I don’t want the motion sensor to keep turning the light on and off while I’m working inside the garage. How can this be handled more effectively?
I’m also still undecided about the terrace. We want a motion sensor there so that if someone approaches the house, the light will turn on. At the same time, we don’t want to be brightly illuminated as if we were in a stadium when sitting on the terrace. Is there a way to control this?
I have electrician appointments coming up, but I would like to know in advance what the best solution might be.

Garage: It should ideally be possible to control this via the door opener. Depending on the opener, there is a 230V (230V) output to switch lights on or off when the door opens or closes.
Terrace: Connect a motion detector to a switch. This way, you can control when you want floodlights.

We have a light installed on our garage door opener that turns on whenever the door is operated, but it doesn’t really illuminate the area well… and when you go from the utility room into the garage, it doesn’t turn on automatically either.
In my garage, I have two switchable damp-rated lights and a lamp with a built-in motion sensor. So as soon as I enter the garage, it turns on, and when I drive the car out, it turns off. Frequent switching on and off is not really an issue because you can set the brightness level needed to activate it.
This light only turns on when it is dark enough, so it stays off when the door is open. I also have the fluorescent tubes on at the same time because it would otherwise be too bright.
On my terrace, I also have two lights that I can switch from inside. For this, I installed a double switch that controls both.
This lets me switch the lights completely off, to motion sensor mode, or permanently on.
There are also special switches that allow this, but they cost about 60 euros. Our electrician implemented it using a simple double switch.

This allows me to switch them completely “OFF,” set to “motion sensor,” or keep them permanently “ON.”

Is it like a full on/off switch on the left and a motion sensor on/off switch on the right? Do you happen to have the wiring diagram handy?

Ramon_Serano11 Aug 2017 15:09Hello everyone,
thank you for the reply – I think I had a misunderstanding regarding the garage. I hadn’t considered that the motion sensor doesn’t trigger when the light is already on because it’s too bright.
Does double switch mean two switches?
Thanks and best regards
