ᐅ Craftsmen Working Alone at the House

My husband and I often argue when contractors come to the house. On Monday, the balcony door needs to be repaired. That will take some time. On Friday, the plasterers will come to finish plastering the garage. They will need water, which means they also have to go inside the house.

I am self-employed and have to work constantly. My husband can’t just take time off either. Now he always expects me to quickly go home and supervise the contractors.

That’s nonsense. They can work on their own. I don’t have to sit there watching them. But my husband doesn’t want that at all. Instead, he prefers to get the in-laws involved so they can "guard" the house sitting on the sofa at home. Is it such a hassle like this for you too?

Wow, those are some serious concerns. I would also be very upset if they damaged something, like spilling coffee on the sofa or similar. But could I actually prevent that if I was standing right there?

These are not just concerns; these are facts. You can see it on TV, in shows like hidden camera pranks: people are curious when given the chance and feel unobserved.

I have nothing to hide. I’m not embarrassed either. So, we don’t have any BDSM equipment or anything like that (unfortunately) 😉
I believe he would be bored to death if he rummaged through our closets...

I would also have a problem with leaving strangers alone in my house. I’m not so much worried about theft of large, valuable items (like TVs or similar), but more concerned that our belongings might be searched through and/or small items taken that wouldn’t be immediately noticed—valuable or not. For me, it’s primarily an issue of having strangers invade my private living space and rummage through everything without supervision. “My home” really is “my castle.” I don’t want strangers in my bedroom, bathroom, or other private rooms when I’m not present. That is a real problem for me. I’ve always felt that way. Even as a teenager, I hated it when someone was in my room without being watched (maybe because of some bad experiences back then, like catching a "friend" reading my diary). Even though I have nothing to hide, for me this is a serious breach of my privacy. And people are naturally curious. Unfortunately, I can’t be sure that my private space will stay private if workers or others are alone in my house.

If it really can’t be helped, I would lock all rooms except those where the worker actually needs access. In particular, bathrooms, bedrooms, and offices feel too “intimate” for me to allow strangers in without supervision. If those rooms were locked, I would probably let the workers into my house so, for example, the painter could fetch water from the utility room or kitchen when neither my husband nor I can be there at the same time. I’m oddly not as sensitive about the living room, kitchen, or utility room. The other rooms would then be locked, and I would also keep money and valuables locked in those private rooms (of course, no guarantee, but I wouldn’t trust workers to have the criminal intent to break down bedroom doors). If any work had to be done in the “private rooms,” I would insist that either my husband or I be present at the same time.

We don’t have practical experience with this yet since our house is still under construction. It hasn’t happened in our apartment before. We’ll see how we handle it in reality later on.

We always let the tradespeople work alone at our place. So far, it has always gone well. I manage this with a guest PIN for the garage door and leave the side door between the garage and the house unlocked.

If I were to be concerned about anything, it would probably be a few expensive paintings, but the tradesperson is least likely to be interested in those.

We have cameras inside and outside the house 🙂 We are not living here yet, but the cameras are already online (LTE), so I can check who is doing what 🙂

Our cleaner spends three hours in the house every week, so a few tradespeople don’t really matter to me.
