Hello everyone, I am the new member from Frankfurt Hausen.
My wife wants an "American-style refrigerator,"
and she will get one, but it requires a water connection.
Who has experience with this?
Can I use a copper pipe up to the water tap?
If yes, what diameter should it be?
Do I need to use sealing paste or hemp fiber for the seal?
Thanks 😎

We have a Samsung with a direct water connection. We once had one with a water tank, which I found annoying. The water in the tank also didn’t stay very fresh after half a day... and then there was the constant refilling. Since our very good tap water is also our drinking water, a direct connection was necessary, and I consider it pure luxury.

If you are getting a new kitchen or even an entirely new house, you can include the fresh water connection for 3.65 euros and just install one or two Y-connectors under the faucet.

We are also looking for an American-style refrigerator, so I’d like to bring this topic up again. We are leaning towards a fridge with a water tank—has anyone had experience with this?I have experience. I wouldn’t want to miss our side-by-side anymore. However, if I had to buy one again, I would choose one with a direct water connection.
The reason I bought one with a tank was that I hardly drank still water before. My wife prefers to juice fruit, and the kids tend to choose sweet juice when given the option. Based on this usage pattern, the tank was the first choice. Today, I drink MUCH more water from the fridge—meaning still water. For this reason, I would now prioritize a direct water line.
I recommend considering this for your decision as well. Do you drink a lot of still water? Do you use a lot of ice?
Also take a look at the "French Door" refrigerators. I think they are quite good as well. What bothers me about the side-by-side refrigerator is that a certain part of the fridge compartment is located very low, so you have to bend down. Additionally, the freezer section is like a cabinet, but I find drawers much more practical.
A model like that is on our wish list. Let’s see what comes of it.

I’m quite happy when the side-by-side refrigerator is gone.
As Alex says, the freezer compartment isn’t great; you can stack pizzas nicely in there, but otherwise it’s rather impractical.
It does both reasonably well, but doesn’t excel at either.
Of course, it also depends on what you prioritize (ice maker, chilled water from the tap). On the other hand, it takes up a lot of space.
