Neubau20161 Jul 2016 17:50Hello,
currently, I am working on the electrical planning. I am wondering whether network cabling makes sense in a new build or not. So far, I have planned only a double socket in the living room and a double socket in the office. Nowadays, people mostly use tablets or laptops and connect via Wi-Fi. What is your opinion on this?

We now have over 30 sockets installed, and I’m still a bit skeptical—partly because we still don’t have internet.
Wi-Fi is always a challenge with reinforced concrete ceilings. For example, we also have the problem that LTE coverage isn’t available throughout the house, or is mostly only good right by the kitchen window.
Wherever you want to install a TV, I think it makes sense to have a LAN socket.
Otherwise, I’m sure there are home technology experts here who might have a different perspective on this...

We have network cables installed in almost every room – sometimes up to 8 sockets.
But if you plan this way, you are likely to use it less. I would still recommend installing more sockets – a double socket in every living area.

I was also considering installing an additional network outlet on each floor to possibly set up an access point there. I’ve checked other sources, and everyone recommends having at least one network outlet in every room, except maybe the bathroom. I’ll review the costs again with my electrician.
Did you install CAT 6 or CAT 7 cables?

It’s not going to be as cheap as a typical router, but the entire wiring doesn’t come for free either.
Plus, you get more flexibility.
In the end, I installed a double socket in every room, but my wife prefers wireless. And anyway, the smartphone or tablet has to work.
