Hello everyone,
I have a rather technical question about the Malm headboard from Ikea: Why does this headboard squeak so much, especially when moving it? I have noticed that it mostly happens when the bed is slightly shifted or leaned against, and often after only a short period of use. I suspect that the construction or the materials used play a role, possibly also the connections between the slats or screws.
Has anyone experienced something similar or can explain why the Malm headboard is particularly prone to squeaking? Are there any tips to prevent or reduce the noise without having to replace the entire headboard?
I would appreciate it if you could share your insights or solutions. Thanks in advance!

Hello lauflo1,
I’m quite familiar with this issue and also find it pretty annoying, especially during the quiet evening hours.
In my experience, the squeaking usually comes from small gaps at the joints—where the screws hold the wood together. When the wood moves slightly and the screws aren’t completely tight, the surfaces rub against each other, causing the squeaking.
You can often improve this simply by tightening the screws or applying some lubricant, like candle wax or special furniture wax. It’s a bit bothersome, but doable.
Sometimes temperature and humidity changes also play a role. Wood naturally expands and contracts, which can also cause such noises.
Hopefully, this assessment helps you out 🙂

Hello everyone,
What Joe52 said makes sense. I just want to add that the Malm headboard usually uses relatively thin wood veneer or an MDF board. It is very stable and looks great – but if the screws are tightened too much, the material can slightly shift in the screw holes, causing creaking.
I once clamped small felt or rubber pads between the connecting surfaces – basically as a cushion to reduce friction. This significantly reduced the creaking without compromising the stability of the headboard.
You could give it a try – it costs nothing and is quick to do 😉 Hope this helps ease your problem!

To the point:
- Check and tighten screws.
- Apply wax or graphite at contact points.
- Use rubber buffers or felt as friction dampers.
- Inspect wood for cracks or loose joints.
These are the most common solutions for squeaky furniture, especially for headboards like the Malm.
Usually, this is all you need.
