Hello everyone, I assembled a BILLY shelf from IKEA, all screws are tightly fastened, and the back panel is properly in place. However, the shelf still wobbles when I gently push it or place a book on it. The surface it stands on is level, and I have also checked that none of the screws are loose. I’m surprised because I expected the shelf to be stable and suitable for a living room. Does anyone have an idea what might be causing the wobbling? It is important to me to find the cause without having to dismantle the entire unit again. Thanks in advance for your help!

Check if the shelf is level. Even slightly uneven flooring can cause wobbling, even if everything is screwed together tightly. If necessary, place small shims under the feet.

Wobbling in BILLY shelves, despite all screws being tightened, is often caused by a missing or unevenly secured back panel. The back panel provides the shelf’s so-called “torsional rigidity.” A properly attached and flat-mounted back panel acts like a diagonal brace and prevents lateral movement.

If the back panel is only fixed with a few nails or is warped due to tension, the shelf can still wobble even if all screws are tight.

Additionally, the shelves may not be firmly seated in the designated grooves, or the connection between the side panels and the shelves may not be optimal.

My advice: Check the back panel’s full-surface fixation again, ideally using enough nails or screws. Even slight unevenness in the floor or under the feet can be a factor, so examine the base surface carefully.

I agree with this and would like to add: BILLY shelves are simple flat-pack furniture that mainly gain stability from the back panel. If the back panel is slightly warped or does not lie completely flat against the carcass, movement can occur.

It is also worth checking the floor. Even small, barely visible unevenness can result in several millimeters (inches) of difference for a shelf, causing it to wobble.

Sometimes applying felt pads or small plastic feet to the legs can help to compensate for unevenness.

Another common cause is the absence of the wall fastening described in the instructions, which is not always mandatory but ensures stability—especially for taller models.

If the shelf is intended to stand free, it is essential to have a very level floor and make sure all joints are properly aligned.
