ᐅ Why does a missing back panel cause issues with BILLY bookcases?

Hello everyone, I recently bought some Billy shelves from IKEA and was wondering: why does the lack of a back panel in BILLY shelves actually cause problems? I mean, technically you could use the shelves without a back panel, but I feel like the stability suffers as a result. I'm particularly interested in what mechanical or structural disadvantages arise from this and whether the back panel has functions beyond just stability. Does anyone have experience or a technically sound explanation on this?

Wall mounting combined with sturdy brackets can partially replace the back panel. Without a back panel, everything else is just a compromise.

It is also important that the fixings used for wall mounting are stable and suitable for the wall itself: heavy-duty anchors or metal fasteners depending on the wall material.

Without a back panel, care should be taken to ensure the shelf is subject to as little lateral stress as possible. Slightly pre-tensioning the side panels using clamps or additional supports can be helpful.

This makes assembly more complex but at least prevents tipping.
