Hello everyone, some time ago I bought a Billy bookshelf from IKEA and assembled it exactly according to the instructions – everything is sturdy and neat. However, I have noticed that after a few weeks some of the shelves visibly warp, showing a slight sagging and a more noticeable bulge. I’m wondering: why do some BILLY shelves warp despite correct assembly? Does anyone know the reasons for this or have tips on how to prevent it? I’m particularly interested in whether the material plays a role or if environmental factors like temperature and humidity contribute more to the problem. Looking forward to your insights and suggestions!

Humidity and heavy loads are the main causes. Always seal the edges and store heavy items preferably at the bottom. This way, floors generally remain level.

The material is a cheap wood-based product, so moisture is the number one issue.

Temperature does have an effect, but humidity is usually more critical, especially if there is no sealant applied.

If the floors warp despite careful installation, this is often a sign that the load was not distributed optimally. Lower-quality materials react strongly to moisture. Reduce the load, distribute it more evenly, and protect the edges.
