Hello everyone, I am currently dealing with an issue with Billy bookshelves from IKEA. I have noticed that the connections, such as screws and dowels, come loose after a short time, making the entire shelf unstable. I suspect this is not only happening to me but is a common problem with this model. My question is: why do the connections on Billy bookshelves keep loosening? Is it due to the design, the materials used, faulty assembly, or is this a typical issue for shelves in this price range? Are there ways to prevent or improve this? I look forward to your opinions and experiences.

The problem with Billy shelves stems from the combination of particleboard panels with low-quality fasteners. The screws do not hold up over time, especially if the shelf is frequently loaded or moved. Additionally, the holes for dowels and screws are quite tight, which weakens the material at the attachment points. To prevent this, I recommend using special furniture connectors or high-quality screws. Tightening the connections again after a few weeks can also help. Furthermore, the shelf should not be overloaded.
I find this really interesting! 🙂 I had the same problem with my Billy shelf and was able to significantly improve it by regularly tightening the screws and inserting small wooden shims between the shelf boards and the side panels. This strengthens the joints and makes the shelf last much longer. Give it a try, it’s worth it! :-)
The issue is well known and relates to the material. Particle boards tend to swell significantly when exposed to moisture, which alters the fit of the connecting elements and causes screws to loosen. Additionally, the connections are designed for quick self-assembly, which leads to material fatigue under repeated stress. Solutions: use water-resistant boards or additional wooden dowels that provide better hold.

I believe that frequent overloading and improper use are the main reasons. These shelves are affordable and are often misused for heavy storage. How can the construction remain stable over time under such conditions? Therefore, the issue is not primarily material quality but user behavior.
