I find your project very interesting and can share my own experience of converting my Kallax into a room divider with a seating surface.
First, I followed these steps:
1. Choice of seating surface: I used an 18 mm (0.7 inch) thick plywood board because it is sturdy yet not too heavy.
2. Attachment: I fixed the plywood with folding hinges so the seating surface can be lifted up when needed.
3. Load capacity: To ensure the shelf can handle the extra weight, I secured the Kallax at the bottom with strong brackets mounted to the wall. This prevents tipping.
4. Cushioning: I cut foam (about 5 cm (2 inches)) and covered it with durable fabric. The cushioning is attached with hook-and-loop fasteners, making it easy to remove.
5. Additional tips: Make sure to sand the seating surface as smoothly as possible to prevent injuries and ensure comfortable placement.
Common mistakes include using boards that are too thin or fastening the seating surface insecurely—these should definitely be avoided.

I don’t have much DIY experience myself, but I’m at least worried that it might not be stable enough and someone could fall while sitting on it. How do you feel about that? Have you tested how much weight the Kallax can hold when sitting on it? Maybe we could also discuss safety aspects here?

As an addition: When converting a Kallax unit into a seating room divider, structural stability is crucial. The Kallax shelving is made of MDF panels with limited load capacity, especially across the grain. Using a plywood board as the seat surface is advisable, since plywood consists of multiple veneer layers, providing higher transverse load resistance.
For fastening, I strongly recommend sturdy hinges and additionally securing the unit to the floor or wall with screws. The greatest risk is tipping caused by lateral forces when sitting down.
The design should safely support the load of an average adult (around 80 kg (176 lbs)) with a safety factor of at least 2.
