We are currently considering which outdoor furniture to choose for our patio. I would prefer something comfortable to lounge in since we will already have a dining set in the gazebo. That’s why I like the idea of a lounge set. However, I'm wondering how durable these pieces are. Our patio is not covered, and the furniture would have to stay outside during winter as well.

I was thinking of something like this:

Terrace seating by the sea: gray rattan sofa set, blue cushions, glass table with hydrangea flower

Set rattan outdoor table with chairs by the pool, mountain landscape and stone wall in the background.

The furniture is made of aluminum with rattan.

Does anyone have experience with this type of furniture? Can it withstand all weather conditions if left outside? Would protective covers be enough?

What kind of outdoor furniture have you chosen for your patio, and why?

We have something like that, exactly the same design. You just need to make sure the furniture is well made and closely resembles rattan cane. The cheaper versions with flat rattan don’t last long because pieces tend to tear out over time.

Protective tarps are sufficient, and everything can stay outside during winter. It’s now our second winter, and they still look as if they were just delivered. There’s no roof, just a canopy.

I always criticize fake materials but ended up buying something like that myself – my wife wanted outdoor furniture made of rattan. However, the material is not suitable for overwintering outside. So we have furniture outdoors that is "woven" like rattan furniture and looks like rattan, but is actually made of plastic.
I still find the feel somewhat unusual, but the pieces are really good. Cushions come inside for the winter, furniture stays outdoors.

Do you have a brand name?

Plastic rattan is well suited. The manufacturer doesn’t really matter. What’s important is that the frame is actually aluminum. Cheaper manufacturers use plain steel, which then rusts. My ex took our old set – it has been exposed to wind and weather since 2012. Just rinse it with a pressure washer in spring, and that’s all the maintenance it needs.

Yes, I can only confirm that. I have had the pseudo-rattan garden chair set from Lidl outside for 8 years now, and nothing has happened to the chairs.

The cushions are stored in a spacious storage box from Keter. They stay outside year-round, summer and winter, although under a roofed area. Since the space is open, the cushions do get wet occasionally, but this does not damage them.
