Hello everyone,

I am currently looking into the maintenance of BILLY shelves and would like to know: which spare parts are the easiest to replace on BILLY shelves? Specifically, I am interested in which components can be swapped out without much effort or special tools, and whether there are differences depending on the year of manufacture or model variant.

It is important for me to understand how prone the individual parts are to damage and which parts usually need to be replaced first due to typical wear. If you have any tips on how to proceed with disassembly, please share! Thanks in advance.

Best regards!

This is a generally good question, but perhaps a bit too broad. BILLY shelves have various components such as shelves, side panels, back panels, screws, and dowels.

In my experience, the shelves themselves are the easiest to replace – they just rest on small dowels and can often be removed without any tools. However, I have seen cases where the back panel needed replacing, which is usually much more complicated because the unit has to be disassembled.

That said, are we sure that the replacement system is consistent across all models? Older BILLY shelves sometimes have differences in dowel sizes and attachment methods. It would help to know exactly which variants are being referred to.

Overall, shelves are probably the easiest to exchange, screws and dowels require a screwdriver and rubber mallet, and back panels tend to be more difficult. Regarding common issues, I can say that especially the lower shelves tend to sag under excessive load and then need replacing.

I can confirm this from a technical perspective, but I would like to clarify: Most BILLY shelves are designed so that the shelf boards rest on small plastic or metal dowels that can be easily pulled out. These dowels are usually standardized and can be replaced if needed.

It is important when replacing them to position the dowels correctly so the shelves sit securely. Sometimes the dowels are inserted with a slight offset, which can cause minor wobbling later on.

Furthermore, it is advisable to check the back panel—which is usually made of thin hardboard or particleboard—at the same time. If the back panel is damaged, nails or small staples should definitely be inspected and replaced if necessary. This requires a bit more effort but ensures long-term stability.

Now, regarding disassembly: Shelves can be most easily removed by gently lifting and disengaging them from their supports. Screwed parts should only be loosened if absolutely necessary, as re-screwing can cause fitting issues.

If you have a specific model, Mindo, could you please provide its exact dimensions and year of manufacture? Then I can give you targeted advice on how to best disassemble the shelf and which replacement parts—original or aftermarket—are recommended.

I completely agree with that.

Additionally, dowels are the parts that most often need to be replaced in BILLY lobby shelves. Usually, a simple wooden mallet and a screwdriver are sufficient.

The back panels are more difficult because they are nailed in and often break when you try to remove them. Therefore, it’s better to only replace the back panels if you are prepared to fully disassemble the shelf.

For anyone looking for a quick repair: shelves and dowels are the spare parts you can replace quickly and easily.

This has worked flawlessly for me for years.
