sinvinHello everyone,
I’d like to start a discussion on a specific topic and hope to gather some experiences and tips from you: What mistakes should definitely be avoided when assembling and using Ikea Hemnes furniture?
I’m especially interested in common pitfalls during assembly, but also issues that might arise in everyday use, such as stability, workmanship, or materials. Since Ikea Hemnes is a popular series, it would be great if you could share concrete examples of these mistakes, how to avoid them, and possible solutions.
Looking forward to your insights and an engaging discussion!

- Study the assembly instructions carefully. Hemnes series pieces are sometimes quite complex in design, and incorrect assembly sequences can cause unnecessary delays or fitting problems.
- Do not overtighten screws, as this can cause the wood to split, weakening stability.
- Ensure assembly is done on level surfaces, especially for dressers and wardrobes, to guarantee stability.
- The dowels used should be fully and correctly inserted, as Hemnes furniture involves many wood and plastic components.
- For larger pieces, it is advisable to have a second person assist with holding and aligning.
- Pay attention to mechanical durability during daily use, particularly with drawers, as they are not indestructible.
Another recommendation: After assembly, recheck all screws and tighten them if necessary.

Rashadmeo6 Feb 2021 13:12Hey everyone! I’ve assembled some Hemnes furniture myself – and I can only say: take your time and don’t give up too soon!
I completely agree! Sometimes the parts seem a bit fragile, but if you work carefully and follow each step, you’ll end up with something really sturdy.
If you have trouble assembling: stay calm, take a break, and then continue. It really makes a big difference! 😀

I think the Hemnes furniture is greatly overrated. Sure, IKEA is affordable and well designed, but the pieces are often made with very thin materials and rarely last very long.
I agree with that: the weaknesses become apparent in daily use because the wood is sometimes not sturdy enough for the price. So if you want something durable, you should carefully consider whether Hemnes is the best choice or if it’s better to invest in more robust alternatives.
My advice: Reinforce the furniture whenever possible, for example by securing screws additionally or strengthening joints with wood glue.

A precise analysis adds to the points already mentioned here:
- When assembling the Hemnes dressers, the back panels are often not properly secured, which later leads to instability.
- Shims or leveling materials are frequently missing when furniture is placed on uneven floors, which is a common cause of rattling drawers.
- The supplied screws and fasteners are suitable, but for greater load-bearing capacity, it is recommended to use additional metal brackets to reinforce corner joints.
Although these issues are not serious, avoiding them or taking precautions can significantly improve the furniture’s durability.
