Hello everyone, I am considering using an Ikea Hemnes bed for a DIY project because I really appreciate its sturdy construction and timeless design. I am particularly interested in which types of DIY projects are truly worthwhile when it comes to redesigning or functionally expanding a Hemnes bed. I don’t just mean simple repainting or the classic upcycling approach, but well-thought-out modifications, extensions, or clever additional features that significantly enhance both utility and style. Does anyone have experience or ideas on projects that work especially well with the Hemnes bed? And what should be kept in mind, especially regarding stability and material compatibility?

I am also wondering whether the original poster is specifically planning to change the mattress storage or just add extra furniture? Good question! My main plan is to expand the bed with additional storage, possibly with integrated pull-out drawers or a hinged slatted frame that provides access to storage space. I do not intend to change the mattress storage itself, as I don’t want to affect comfort. Additionally, I am interested in equipping the headboard with practical features such as USB ports or a reading light to make the sleeping area more multifunctional.
Adding storage space under the Hemnes bed is a reasonable and practical idea, especially when working with limited space. From a technical perspective: when integrating pull-out drawers, it is important to use high-quality drawer slides that can withstand lateral loads. A commonly overlooked aspect is the installation of the drawer fronts. Hemnes beds typically have visible screw holes that must be considered; otherwise, the result can quickly look untidy. Furthermore, it is worthwhile to check before installing the drawers whether the bed base needs to be replaced or reinforced, as the standard material is usually quite thin. For the headboard, I recommend installing a small cable management solution, as messy cables can otherwise spoil the overall appearance.
From a practical perspective, I consider the following DIY options for the Ikea Hemnes bed particularly recommendable: - Converting it into a loft bed, provided there is enough ceiling height, while maintaining stability through additional cross beams - Installing fully extendable drawers under the sleeping surface, since the bed system is already made of pine wood, which can bear the corresponding load - Adding a padded headboard for increased comfort - Upgrading with LED light strips and USB hubs as a targeted enhancement of multifunctionality The design of the Hemnes series is simple and sturdy. As long as measurements are precise and suitable hardware is used, modifications can achieve good results.
