Ja_manHello everyone,
I recently purchased furniture from the Hemnes series by Ikea and am now looking for the best care products to properly maintain and protect the wood surfaces. The surfaces are partly lacquered but have a more natural feel rather than a high-gloss finish. I am especially interested in which cleaning agents or care products (e.g., oil, wax, specialized wood care products) you would recommend for this type of wood surface.
It is important to me that the products are not too harsh and do not alter or discolor the surface. Who has experience caring for Hemnes furniture and can share tips on suitable products or even home remedies? Are there any specific methods or maintenance intervals that have proven effective?
Thank you in advance for your helpful advice!

The Ikea Hemnes furniture is typically made from solid pine wood with a finish that creates a matte to slightly satin protective layer. Accordingly, the surfaces are relatively durable but still vulnerable to alcohol, strong solvents, or harsh cleaners.
For cleaning, a soft, slightly damp cloth (not soaking wet) with mild dish soap is recommended. Wipe dry afterwards.
For maintenance, unscented wood care oils or natural-based waxes designed specifically for lacquered wood surfaces are suitable. Alternatively, a penetrating wood cream can protect and nourish the surface without altering its appearance.
It is important not to apply maintenance products too frequently—ideally every 3 to 6 months—depending on usage and environmental conditions. Too frequent oil or wax application can soften or discolor the finish.
In any case, new products should always be tested first on an inconspicuous area.

Additional note: For those who prefer to play it safe with Hemnes furniture, it is recommended to use a care product specifically designed for lacquered solid wood. Here is a brief tutorial:
- Step 1: First, wipe the furniture with a damp microfiber cloth to remove dust.
- Step 2: If needed, use a mild soap solution, but avoid soaking the surface.
- Step 3: After drying, apply a thin layer of special wood care oil or furniture wax.
- Step 4: Massage the care product into the surface with a soft cotton cloth, then polish off any excess after 10–15 minutes.
Common mistakes include using too much product or applying products containing alcohol or solvents, as these can damage the lacquer. Abrasive cleaners should also be strictly avoided!
This method preserves the natural look without darkening or altering the surface.

Typical mistakes include using too much product or applying products that contain alcohol or solvents, as these can damage the paint. I want to emphasize exactly that. Sometimes people mistakenly believe that stronger cleaners work better, but in reality, they damage the paint. It is important to always use gentle, pH-neutral cleaning agents and maintenance products that support the natural protective layer without penetrating or dissolving it.
I wonder if the factory finish on Ikea Hemnes furniture is already good enough that maintenance products are not really necessary. Isn’t sanding and re-oiling Hemnes furniture more of a misconception?
Does it make more sense to simply dust the furniture regularly and wipe it down with a dry cloth? And when exactly is a wood oil treatment actually needed? I’m looking for well-founded experiences that can confirm or refute this.
