Hello everyone, I am currently in the process of redesigning my living room and home office and am considering using different Billy shelves from IKEA for this purpose. However, I have a question: which Billy shelves are best suited for the living room and office when looking for the best combination of storage capacity, appearance, and flexibility? It is important to me that the shelves are not only practical but also visually fit the overall room design, especially when used for multiple purposes (books, files, decorations). Which options (height, width, depth) would you recommend, also regarding possible additional shelves, doors, or other storage solutions? I look forward to your experiences and advice!

I recommend the 40cm deep Billy shelves for the living room, especially suitable for books and decorations.
In the office, 28cm is sufficient, and combining them with doors is practical.

For books and files, 80cm (31.5 inches) wide shelves are more stable. Doors in the office help protect against dust. The depth depends on the room size.

If you want to use shelves flexibly, the 40cm (15.7 inches) deep Billy units are best.
I only recommend doors if you want to hide a lot of small items. For an office, the 28cm (11 inches) depth is usually sufficient, as long as no large binders need to be stored.

For the office, I usually use the 80x28 cm (31.5x11 inches) Billy with doors. Sturdy, lots of storage space.
In the living room, rather 40 cm (16 inches) deep, without doors, for an open look.
