Hello everyone, I am facing the problem of repairing a damaged Ikea Metod kitchen front and am looking for the right adhesive for this. The front is made of a coated MDF panel with a melamine finish, and the damage involves a broken-off corner as well as some smaller surface cracks. It is important to me that the adhesive cures without affecting the appearance, remains as transparent as possible, and provides enough strength to ensure a durable repair. It should also be considered that the glued area is in the kitchen, so the adhesive needs to be resistant to moisture and temperature changes. Does anyone have experience with specific adhesives that work particularly well for Metod fronts? Which products or types of adhesive have held up well for you, and how is the application process? Thanks for any well-founded recommendations, including tips for surface preparation or aftercare.

For repairing an Ikea Metod kitchen cabinet front, I recommend a two-part epoxy adhesive. It bonds very well to MDF and melamine, is moisture-resistant, and cures clear. It is important to clean the surfaces thoroughly and remove any grease beforehand.

Hello Tanben54, I would like to give you a brief guide on how to approach the repair optimally:

- Preparation: Clean the damaged area thoroughly with isopropanol or alcohol to remove grease and dirt.
- Adhesive choice: A clear two-component epoxy resin adhesive works very well, as it not only bonds firmly but is also resistant to water and temperature changes.
- Application: Mix the two components precisely according to the manufacturer’s instructions and apply the adhesive sparingly and evenly.
- Fixation: It is best to hold the front in place during curing with clamps or locking pliers to avoid stress.
- Aftercare: Excess adhesive can be carefully removed with a spatula before it hardens. After it has fully cured, you can lightly sand the surface with fine-grit sandpaper if needed.

Avoid using photovoltaic system glue (wood glue), as it does not hold well on melamine surfaces and becomes soft quickly when exposed to moisture.

I hope this helps you!

I fully agree but would like to add that not every epoxy adhesive works equally well on all melamine coatings, as surface smoothness can vary. Therefore, it’s best to test a small bonding area first.

Very important advice. Otherwise, hairline cracks or uneven glue joints often occur.

From my own experience, lightly roughening the surface before repair, for example with fine sandpaper (about 220 grit), also helps improve adhesion. However, the melamine film should not be completely removed, only slightly roughened.
