Hello everyone,

I recently assembled an IKEA Billy bookshelf and noticed that the back panel does not hold properly. Specifically, the thin particle board can be slid in, but it wobbles noticeably and does not fit securely. I installed all screws and dowels as described, but the back panel is not fixed without tension.

My question to the community is: What can be done if the back panel of a BILLY bookshelf does not hold? Are there proven methods to better secure the backing material or alternative solutions? I want to avoid compromising the stability of the bookshelf.

Thanks for your tips and suggestions!

Measuring the back panel: Is it cut to the correct size? Sometimes it can be slightly too large or too small. In this case, sand the back panel down a little or carefully trim it to fit.

Nails or small screws are usually the quickest solution. You can attach the back panel directly to the side wall using thin nails. It’s simple and provides immediate support.

That is correct and important. If the back panel is not properly fitted, it can reduce the lateral stability of the shelf. If you want to replace the back panel, make sure to match the thickness and ensure it fits snugly into the groove without being too tight, so it does not warp.

In addition to mechanical fasteners, it is recommended to carefully clean the groove areas before installing the back panel and, if necessary, lightly sand them with fine sandpaper. This ensures a better fit.

Another option is to lightly coat the groove with clear varnish or primer – this can increase friction and prevent loosening later.

This is a good tip, as it positively affects the joint strength and durability without damaging the material.

Sometimes a simple trick can help: remove the back panel, apply some wood glue to the groove, reinstall the back panel, and clamp or secure it with clamps until the glue has dried. After that, it will be noticeably more stable.
